Franklin Nature Trail
Eagle River, WI TrailThe Franklin Nature Trail is a gorgeous easy hiking trail located east of Eagle River and north of Three Lakes, Wisconsin. The trail is a short 1 mile loop that is mostly flat. It makes an excellent loop for anyone who wants to experience the beauty of the Northwoods without the need to hike for a long distance.
The Franklin Nature Trail is an interpretive trail. It has an information booklet provided at the trailhead and 21 stopping spots along the trail to learn about the area and the flora and fauna. The booklet can be used in conjunction with these spots to provide a description of the habitat and also the history of the area.
This nature trail winds its way through northern Wisconsin hemlock, pine and hardwood forest. Some of these trees are over 400 years old! It takes you next to Butternut Lake and is a short distance from Franklin Lake. You also get to walk across a Northwoods bog and find the various plant life that lives there. A short portion of the trail is wheel chair accessible.
If you are a hiker looking for a more adventurous route, the Franklin Nature Trail connects with the well known Hidden Lakes Trail system. You can extend your hike into a full weekend excursion if you wish by adding these 15+ miles of trail.
There are toilets provided at the Franklin Nature trailhead and pets are allowed to accompany you as long as they are kept on a leash. There is a $5 day use fee or you can purchase the $30 annual fee for access to National Forests.
